Dr. Arash Azarbal with Pasadena Dental Aesthetics discusses dental implants and how missing teeth replacement can improve dental function, smile aesthetics, and oral health.

Pasadena, CA – According to the American Dental Association, approximately 120 million people in America have at least one missing tooth, and about 36 million are missing all of their teeth. Dr. Arash Azarbal, a cosmetic dentist in Pasadena and the director of Pasadena Dental Aesthetics, says even a single missing tooth can create oral health problems such as bone loss in the jaw, gum disease, and the shifting of adjacent teeth, not to mention the effects on dental function and appearance. Dr. Azarbal notes that individuals with several teeth missing may even experience changes in their overall facial proportions, which can ultimately alter their facial appearance. Fortunately, Dr. Azarbal says, advanced restorative dentistry options such as dental implants and new advances in denture prosthetics make it possible to replace missing teeth with results that closely mimic the look, function, and feel of natural teeth.

A dental implant is essentially designed to serve as an artificial tooth root. Made of a durable titanium material, a dental implant is anchored to the jawbone, where it should eventually fuse with the bone itself and become a part of the mouth. A custom dental crown securely affixed to the top of the implant allows for results that, for many patients, are virtually indistinguishable from a natural tooth. Dr. Azarbal says a dental implant can also help preserve jawbone density and maintain its health. For multiple missing teeth, Dr. Azarbal notes that dental implants ultimately resolve many of the issues that some individuals encounter with traditional dentures, such as a poor fit or movement and slippage along the gums.

While dental implants can be good options for patients with a single missing tooth or several missing teeth, Dr. Azarbal explains that some individuals with full sets of missing teeth may require or prefer an option such as implant-supported dentures to meet their needs. This “hybrid” version of dentures utilizes a select number of dental implants placed in strategic areas of the mouth, which will then serve as a foundation for a custom denture. Dr. Azarbal says this approach ultimately provides patients with a more secure denture, enhancing chewing ability while reducing reliance on adhesives and putties to keep the appliance in place.

Regardless of the treatment technique, Dr. Azarbal says, individuals who have missing teeth should strongly consider having them replaced to avoid the oral health conditions they can produce, as well as the potential for more serious problems later. He notes that even missing teeth that one may not think of as very important, such as the back teeth, can lead to severe consequences for surrounding teeth and overall oral health. For patients who may not be candidates for dental implant procedures, Dr. Azarbal explains that there are still a variety of treatment options, such as dental bridges or advanced custom dentures, that can be of benefit. Ultimately, Dr. Azarbal says, missing teeth replacement can significantly improve both functional and aesthetic concerns with results that give patients new reasons to smile.
